Storyline
An insomniac taxi driver wants to save a sex worker who has been forced into a livelihood. No, this is not the one-line story of Taxi Driver.
The movie of the 1991 Mahesh Bhatt directorial Sadak, which featured Sanjay Dutt and Pooja Bhatt in the main roles. While Sadak is not only about a cab driver, it is a polite production movie with a spectacular performance by the late Sadashiv Amrapurkar, who essayed the role of a eunuch called Maharani in the film.
Dutt’s Ravi is a guy who is haunt by his past. He reenters a recall of his sister (Soni Razdan in a special entrance) falling from a hospital. Ravi’s sister in a movie is a prostitute who is considering against her will at Maharani’s brothel.
She ultimately gets killed by Maharani. It is adequately hinted that Ravi is suffering from some form of mental illness due to latent grief.
However, the way that has been handled in the film is questionable. There are multiple scenes where Avtar Gill’s Salim Bhai guides Dutt to snap out of his grief by calling him ‘Pagal.’ Later, they take Ravi to a psychiatric ward, where the doctor states that he needs an electric shock to set him right.
Reviews
Even Sadak’s editing and filming are a little uninvolved from Mahesh Bhatt’s earlier people admire his works like Naya Daur, Arth, and Saaransh, where less but more. In Sadak, we see the director patter into his more profitable side with single-layered storytelling and dated dialogs.
However, it is tough to ignore Sanjay Dutt’s and Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s acts in the movie. Despite seeming a little off in a pair of places, Dutt does a trustworthy job of playing the emotional, grief-stricken hero.
Meanwhile, Amrapurkar doesn’t pull back any hits as the villain of the masala movie. As brothel queen ‘Maharani,’ Amrapurkar is short-tempered, a little horrible, and quietly terrifying. The actor looked oddly graceful in his dress, clinking at his colorful bangles as he delivered impulsive dialogues.
Lead female actor Pooja Bhatt had tiny to do in the movie except look pretty and tense. She played the conventional role of a damsel in distress. The song was hummable for the most part, but we usually expect that from a Bhatt feature. The script could have been snugger as the two hours felt longer than it should.
